By Komodo 4D3N Editorial Desk
A Komodo 4D3N is four days and three nights in and around Komodo National Park, normally on a boat, because the agency Seek Sophie says the park has no hotels. Visit Indonesia also publishes a version based in Labuan Bajo. Operators differ on route, cabin and inclusions, so treat 4D3N as a trip length rather than a fixed product.
What is a Komodo 4D3N trip?
The label comes from how sellers write trip length, often spelled out as Komodo 4 days 3 nights. It tells you the length of the trip and nothing about the boat, the stops or the number of people beside you. A shared bunk boat and a private en-suite cabin can both carry the same four characters in their listing.
The place itself is easier to pin down. UNESCO describes Komodo National Park as lying between Sumbawa and Flores, with three major islands (Rinca, Komodo and Padar) and numerous smaller ones, all volcanic. It was declared in March 1980 at 72,000 ha and extended in 1984. Sources disagree on its size: UNESCO gives 219,322 ha for the World Heritage property, while a manta study gives 1,817 km2 of land and sea. We show both because neither settles the other.
UNESCO names the Komodo dragon the largest living lizard, averaging 2 to 3 metres, and its text estimates around 5,700 of them across Komodo, Rinca, Gili Motong and coastal parts of western and northern Flores. That text is undated, so read the number as a rough figure and not as a current census. UNESCO also lists 72 bird species, seven terrestrial mammal species, 10 dolphin species and five sea turtle species.
Three kinds of business sell or describe these trips: operators such as Hello Flores, booking agencies such as Seek Sophie, and booking platforms such as Liveaboard.com. This site is none of those. It is a guide with a request desk and does not own or run boats. Requests through the desk can lead to a paid booking, so we have a commercial interest, explained on the about this guide page.
What does the extra day add?
Time, and the sources cannot agree on how much it matters. A survey by BPOLBF, cited by Kompas, found that most foreign tourists take three days and two nights, so four days is the longer choice and not the default. Hello Flores calls four days the sweet spot for most travellers. It sells these trips, so read that as a seller's opinion. The side-by-side case is on what the extra day adds.
To see what four days can look like, here is one published sample. Other operators use many of the same sites in a different order, and our published itinerary comparison sets them next to each other.
| Day | Stops in the Hello Flores sample |
|---|---|
| 1 | Siaba Besar or Sebayur, Taka Makassar, Manta Point |
| 2 | Padar sunrise, Pink Beach, dragons |
| 3 | Manjarite, Gili Lawa Darat, Kalong |
| 4 | Kanawa, Kelor |
Where do these trips start and end?
Labuan Bajo is the usual starting point. Seek Sophie says it takes a couple of hours by boat from there to reach the park, so ask how much of day one is transit. It also says there are no hotels in the park; resorts near the park sit outside that claim. Departure days vary between providers, and no single timetable covers them, so ask the provider for the day it leaves and the hour it returns on day four. That return hour decides your onward flight.
Getting to the harbour is its own planning job. Read flights to Labuan Bajo for routes, and Labuan Bajo before a Komodo boat trip for nights in town. Departures from Lombok are a separate, one-way format with its own page: Lombok to Komodo in 4 days and 3 nights.
Which boats and routes are on offer?
Route labels on listings are broad regions. Liveaboard.com, a booking platform, shows two such labels: Cajoma IV's 4D3N is Central and North, and Maria Seascape's is Central and South. We use those two as examples of how routes get described, and neither is a recommendation. Our guide to north, central and south routes explains what each label tends to mean.
You will also meet the word phinisi. The boatbuilding tradition behind it, in South Sulawesi, was inscribed on a UNESCO intangible heritage list in 2017, per Wikipedia. That honours a craft and says nothing about any one vessel. For deck, bunk and cabin differences, see Komodo 4D3N boat types. For who you would share the trip with, see shared or private Komodo boat.
What should you budget for?
For Labuan Bajo Tourism, an operator, one cost settles the budget: the boat. Around it sit park entry, flights and nights in town. One park fee and three published boat prices appear in the price table on this page, each with its source and the month it was checked. They cover different cabins and conditions, so do not average them. Line-by-line detail is on Komodo 4D3N cost.
Be careful with the phrase all inclusive. It has no shared definition, so ask for the exclusions in writing, park fees above all.
When do conditions tend to suit it?
Weather Spark, which publishes modelled data, runs its wetter season at Labuan Bajo from 11 November through 18 April, a little over five months. The rest of the year is drier on that model, which says nothing about wind or swell on a given week. Rain also trades off against crowds, so read the best time for a Komodo 4D3N alongside Komodo peak season before you fix dates.
What has changed since 2025?
UNESCO names increasing tourism as a major management issue for the park, and two recent rules bear directly on a multi-day trip:
- Visitor limit. The park agency confirmed a limit of 1,000 visitors per day from 1 April 2026, per Antara. The agency also expects 2026 visits to stay at the 2025 level, which sits awkwardly with a cap; that is its own statement. See the 1,000 visitor limit page.
- Night sailing. Boats in park waters must now anchor after dark under an order from the Labuan Bajo harbourmaster, per Indonesia Expat. See the night sailing ban page.
Accident reports, official advice and open questions are collected on is a Komodo boat trip safe. Read it before you pay a deposit on any boat.
Can a Komodo 4D3N work without sleeping on a boat?
Yes. Visit Indonesia, the national tourism site, publishes a four-day plan based in Labuan Bajo. Day one covers town stops. Day two takes a boat out to Padar, Komodo Island and Pink Beach, then heads back to town for dinner. Day three covers Batu Cermin and Rangko Cave, and day four is the flight home. The same page points snorkellers and divers to a live-on-board trip instead. The trade is plain: a bed ashore every night, in exchange for a single day in the park on that plan. Ask for prices on both formats before you choose.

What else do people ask about a Komodo 4D3N?
What does 4D3N mean on a Komodo trip?
It means four days and three nights. The first and last days can include transit, so ask for the departure hour and the return hour before you compare two trips by length.
Who sells Komodo 4D3N trips?
Operators, booking agencies and booking platforms all publish them. The company that contracts with you can differ from the company whose boat you board, so ask for the contracting name in writing.
Where does a Komodo 4D3N trip start?
The plans compared on this site start from Labuan Bajo, on Flores. A separate one-way format runs from Lombok. Check the start and the end point of the trip you are quoted, because they decide your flights.
Is Komodo 4D3N a good first trip?
Opinions split. One seller recommends four days, while a survey cited by Kompas shows most foreign tourists take three days. Your dates, budget and interest in diving matter more than either view.
Does a Komodo 4D3N come all inclusive?
The phrase has no fixed meaning. Before you agree, ask whether park fees, gear, airport transfers and drinks sit inside the quoted figure, and get the answer in writing.
Which published prices did we check?
Official fees and public third-party listings, each with its source and the month we checked it. These are not our prices or offers. Fees and fares change, and sources sometimes disagree, so check the source before you rely on a figure.
